This function seems to perform inconsistently and it's been very difficult to determine why sometimes it runs in 75,587 ms and sometimes runs in 3,489,295 ms.  I would like verbose logging to give more data on the execution of this function so it's easier to compare what's different in the fast runs and the slow runs.
